Where the Wild Things Are

6 July 2007

Solace in cinema is just about my favourite movieblog.
Somehow managing to blend just the right about of geekiness, with a healthy cynicism for most hollywood fare I seem to be interested in most of the things he posts. Being a regular on the site has the distinct advantage of seeing latest trailers and hearing snippets about films I had no idea I was just about to be mildly obsessed with. I say mildly*, that was ‘before cloverfield‘ (or simply ‘the film’ as it will now be known).

So far, we’ve got a shaky videophone version of the trailer and a gradually unfolding set of blogs and youtube clips all designed, it seems, with the sole intention of replacing the ‘reason’ part of my brain with a big inflatable balloon and a desperate, insatiable appetite for the very same kind of vaporous internet hyperbole that gets me like a kid who’s drunk too much squash every two/three months.

It’s all very pattern recognition / I love bees which in itself would be a little bit tiresome if it wasn’t for the fact that the trailer looks so freakin dope. It’s a JJ Abrams production (maker of Lost) so the worry is ‘all premise no payoff’, but right now (well until tomorrow’s obsession) it’s got me more excited than any movie trailer I can remember.

If a The Call of Cthulhu referencing, Blair Witch meets Godzilla, end of the world monster movie doesn’t float your boat, maybe this will. New-(ish) from dj cosmo and jeff buckley collaborator Gary Lucas.

Have a great weekend.

greatest power in the world

14 February 2007

oddly, since its valentine’s day, I heard from two different sets of friends who just split up with their respective long time beaus today. seems like  sometimes there’s just something in the air and sure, not everyone can be as ridonkulously loved up as certain bloggers i could mention, but it’d be a shame to ignore the fact that today is the internationally sanctioned panic buying of expensive tat during your lunch hour because you don’t wanna get caught out looking like you don’t care day.

do i sound bitter? i do hope not, ’cause i’m not but valentine’s day should be about the love people, not just the heart shaped chocolate truffles and specially rebranded bottles of pink moet. st valentine died for love, not edible red licorice panties* but that don’t mean i’m about to get all pious (*or return the ‘gift’ -  erm, thanks baby)

in fact,  i reckon we should take a leaf out of dusty’s book and get our hand bell ringing, troubadour brass, big fatwhite soul chorus on ’specially for today and celebrate the love power.

let’s get it on…

Boombox Love

28 September 2006

Being of a mildly obsessional nature, it almost goes without saying that horselatitudes *heart* japan. Who could resist a nation that so readily embraces the sort of mild autistism that inspires people to make super authentic retro clothes or take car customization to the next level.

Adding fuel to this unrequited passion are sites like TURBOSONIC which stock a wicked selection of 70s/80s boomboxes and associated t-shirt range.
Heavy!

Thankfully I have good friends (yeah you, jizzy!) heading Nippon-ward anyday now-looks like their ‘what present shall I get for uncle jack ?’ problems are finally at an end.

Geek shit

23 September 2006

You know it’s not really about super flashy new technlogy (well…maybe just a bit).
It’s more about clever new ideas (disruptive ideas even) that get me excited (that and awesome looking comic film adaptations).

Anyway here’s three incredibly simple and yet wonderful exciting geek things that have floated my boat over the last couple of days (and I shall be almost certainly buying all three).

Moo

it uses flickr, it looks cool and I need some business cards (that look better than my housemates*) and it’s british!!!

Neuros OSD
Looks cool, does loads of useful recording tv/transfering to ipod sort of gubbins, is open source so is going to be constantly upgraded by our uber-geek overlords. (how rubbish does iTV look now** ?)

FON
Wireless router $5 with added social wifi love.
It’s like living in the future (only closer).
*just because he doesn’t know it’s a competition doesn’t mean it isn’t. (it just means I have a better chance of winning)
**but I still want one
