Big Red

I still remember the initial excitement I felt first reading about the Red-One last year. Seems that original promise has, if anything, been exceeded by the product itself.(how often does that happen?)

There’s a fascinating background piece about the company and it’s founder over at Wired, articulating just how disruptive the introduction of a cheap, high spec digital camera could be on the staid world of traditional film making. But, as John Gruber points out, I think it’s the consumer level “Scarlet” which has me excited.

Reminds me of the revolution in music-making that occurred with the introduction of pro-quality/consumer priced hardware and software.

Anyone want to be part of the cinematic equivalent to House music?

A game-changer in the making.

yeah i was reading about that, it makes me quite excited. i have been thinking about trying to be involved somehow with low low budget local filmmaking for a second, having something like that would make it very possible to do cool things for cheap. storing that much data seems to be a concern in terms of cost and irritation, but that should get easier in the next couple of years. i think the true impact of this will be felt a few years down the line as the cameras become available second hand for even cheaper, thats when this can really blow up. exciting times for film!

    Yeah me too.
I’ve always has a secret jones to do something with film one day. Sometimes technology acts as a primer for people who’ve sat on the sidelines and suddenly see an opportunity to do something, that was too complicated/expensive.

If I could just find a way to do cheap cgi, my epic scifi quadrology could finally see the light of day !!
