now, owing to the magic of science -some of the latitudes caught michel gondry’s brilliant the science of sleep from the comfort of a sofa on saturday night. and frankly i can’t recommend it enough.

gondry’s eternal sunshine of a spotless mind was a surefire winner in my book but the science of sleep so perfectly illustrates the life-not-lifeness of dreaming, particularly the sort of dreams you have when you’re falling in love that its the kind of movie i’d have on a compulsorary national curriculum if i was in charge of the horse latitudes state education authority. ironically i’d make bruce springsteen lessons obligatory too and the two things aren’t desparately opposed since the science of sleep features the delightfully named, golden the ponyboy and this here springsteen track is similarly titled, and frankly that’s all the coincidence i need for an excuse to post pony boy.

from the mildly maligned early nineties ‘human touch’ album this song sounds like its been dragged out from an isolated Appellation mountain village where womenfolk lead storytelling from around glowing and spitting campfires and your horse is a friend as well as a mode of transport. featuring his wife, patti scialfa in an oddly melodious harmony and hinting a little at the sort of work he’d later go back to on the ghost of tom joad, Pony Boy is as circuitous and bizarre a love story as the science of sleep.

something about it feels like i’m taking a risk posting this track since there’s every chance you folks won’t like it, though i suppose the same could be said with the science of sleep but since the oddest things happen in dreams i’ll take that gamble with waking life too and trust you’ll give both a chance…

bruce springsteen - pony boy
