Sorting your life out (back from the crates part two)

7 February 2007 by jaksoul

I found this cd at the back of a pile of random cdrs.
It reminds me of living with three other heavy-muso dudes at art college, all discovering this obscure but beautiful music through mags like Straight no Chaser and Blues N Soul. Me’shell NdegeOcello represented this kind of wilfully diffident, yet melodically accessible ideal; edgy music that anyone could get into (but only a few people knew about).

She has never really crossed over to the mainstream in this country, despite creating some fantastic and yet generally overlooked music. This track, Make me wanna holler, is from her second album, Peace beyond Passion (which you pick up for under $3 on amazon marketplace-get on it people!!!)-it a great record-bringing together the volatile themes of sexuality and spirituality as well as anyone since, my man, prince. There is this kind of beautiful melancholy about her music. She’s the kind of girl you would want to keep breaking up with, just to hear the amazing songs she would write about it.

Anyway finding again was like finding a set of photos from happier days, that you thought you’d lost forever, enjoy.
